Our second trip to the San Juan River in New Mexico. This year the flows were almost double those from the previous summer at 1100 cfs. This would have posed some serious problems if we were only wade fishing. Our Takes: The San Juan in New Mexico holds more trophy sized trout than any place we have ever fished. They are also highly pressured and used to people as well as fly patterns. While stealth may not be as important here, fly and tippet size are. 6x and size 22-26 are the norm. Make lots of perfect drifts to sighted fish or through obviously fishy areas is the key. And then… hold on tight!
Flies: Dries include Purple Haze (18-22), Griffith’s Gnat (20), any midge adult (22-26) Nymphs: Foam back midge emerger (22-26), foam back baetis emerger (20-22), anallid or worm pattern (18-20), olive RS2 (20). Fish 5x and 6x mono with dries and 6x fluoro with nymphs. 5 or 6 weight rod.

Thanks, JR. The TRex is great! I have done a lot of modifications to it which has made it more functional for the type of fishing we do. Maybe I should do a video showing those upgrades and changes. Anyway, it is a great way to get two people out on the river or lake and it is fairly easy to transport. I would say it is a good value, but if you go to NRS, you can find all the components to make your own frame setup and then buy a raft on your own. Creek Company has just found a way to market the NRS system and does it pretty well. Not a lot of boats this size out there.
